Leicester, Leicestershire -travel information and accommodation
Leicester lies just off the M1 at junctions 21 and 22, giving it fast and effective connections to both the north and south of the country. It is fitting that such a city in the very heart of England should be famous for its harmonious multi-cultural mix of different races, which is something the rest of the country can all learn from.
Leicester is also a thriving city that has triumphed over adversity. It suffered terribly from World War II bombing raids that destroyed many of the old city buildings and later went through huge industrial decline. Nowadays though Christian, Hindu, Jain, Muslim and Sikh communities have come together to rebuild the city. The liveliness of the area is also down to the constant influx of students that give the place an injection of vibrant youth culture.
For more information on Leicester’s history check out some of their many museums, or take one of the Blue Badge guided tours around the city that encompasses many of the main points of interest. Walks start from just outside the Tourist Information Office every Saturday and are free of charge, so why not make the most of it. Another great idea is to time your visit to coincide with one of their many social events. Leicester is notorious as a city that likes to party and is famous for its festivals such as its Caribbean Carnival and Diwali celebrations. There’s also the popular Elements of Asia festival held every May to August, that includes a whole host of events spanning Asian art, music, dance and culinary delights.
Leicester is also particularly well
set up for great shopping. The main shopping centre,
The Shires, boasts all the major high street names,
whilst the St Martins area and the Leicester Lanes
have a diverse range of boutique stores and designer
outlets. For a really colourful shopping experience
though check out the famous Golden Mile area on
Belgrave Road, packed with great Indian fabric shops
as well as specialising in golden jewellery and Asian
food.
