If you have every dreamt of what space travel would be like then take a trip to Leicester’s Space Centre, on the aptly named Exploration Drive. Here you’ll be able to get involved with loads on interactive activities and have the chance to view space rockets, satellites and space capsules. This centre is particularly popular for educative school trip but has something to interest everyone. Single adult admission £8.95, with family discount tickets available too.
The Abbey Pumping Station was built back in 1891 originally as a sewage pumping station but today it acts as a museum exhibiting the wonders of steam beam engines. There’s also a fun exhibition on the technology of toilets including an interactive loo! Admission to the museum is absolutely free.
For a realistic taste of what life was like in Georgian and Victorian times take a trip to Belgrave Hall & Gardens. The house is a three storey Queen Anne building dating back to 1709 and is set out as it would have look in Georgian and Victorian times. There’s also a picturesque botanic garden that’s also well worth a look.
For a detailed insight into Leicester’s history you need to check out Newarke Houses Museum, where you’ll find a museum that holds a great collection of information and artefacts on Leicester’s social history. The 16th century house is of interest in its own right and the reconstructed Victorian street really gives you the feeling of stepping back in time.
